Stanlow Refinery 1973-1994, Instrument Technician, Stanlow Refinery 1984-1994
  • Selected as one of 5 candidates from an application entry of 150+ for re-training into the Stanlow Instrument Department. Gained HNC in Instrumentation & Control Engineering.
  • Carried out installation, commissioning and routine maintenance, including Quality Assurance Inspection of a broad spread of online and inline QMI and conventional instrumentation, including gas chromatographs; oxygen analysis; gas detection equipment and safeguarding systems.
  • Scheduled inspection and testing of critical to safety instrumentation and Plant safeguarding systems including Fire & Gas detection.
  • Trained apprentices in onsite instruction and provided continuous training through all stages of development.
  • Member of site-wide emergency response team - rota based, with 40-minute response time.
Test Instrumentation Development Engineer 1994-1999

Key member of the instrumentation support team, whose responsibilities include internal modification / upgrade programmes on various in-house equipment, both onsite and at remote test facilities.

  • Identified the department’s need to update the test rig design/support techniques and subsequently established National Instruments LabVIEW product as the most efficient development tool for research instrumentation / test rig operation, control and data acquisition.
  • Instrumental in the delivery of the first internal LabVIEW based DAQ system, a novel lubricating oil test system. This included writing Instrument Driver Software of a level of sophistication that impressed the manufacturers and has since been mimicked by them. Other Shell locations and departments have also utilised this and other driver software.
  • Instrumentation/Electrical lead engineer on a Hydrogen Re-fulling research installation. User interface in LabVIEW with control and safety systems via Allen-Bradley PLC (RSLogix)
  • Demonstrated ability to work in remote locations (e.g. Buxton CPO & Hydrogen programmes –LabVIEW plus Allen-Bradley and Mitsubishi PLCs) with a minimum of resources and to organise support on an international basis through pre-planned contingencies (on site installation of the HiReTS (High Reynolds[number] Thermal Stability) instrument at US Naval Air Warfare Centre, Patuxent River, Md. USA). Consultation support for the commercial version of this instrument. Successful delivery of an automated dual stream engine emissions analysis and logging system from a previously purely manual single stream version. This enabled out of hours test continuation and significantly improved testing throughput and significantly reducing costs.
  • Key member of a project team who successfully completed the installation of Oil Mist Detection Systems in Oman.
  • Involved in the maintenance of, and support for, analytical instrumentation (mainly for engine emission equipment) as well as instrument evaluation for other divisions of the group.
